Last July 5 the economic journal Expansión featured an opinion article by Dr. Roser Vicente, director general of Gesaworld Group, under the title "The Massachusetts Model".
The article draws a parallelism between the US state of Massachusetts and Catalonia in relation to their respective society and economic models as well as the challenges both of them face concerning the sustainability of the healthcare system.
It is in this context that Vicente includes the Second International Seminar on Health and Sustainability organized by Gesaworld Group and held last April at the Harvard Faculty Club in Boston, USA. The seminar topic was "Innovation in the health sector: a global debate". The event was very successful and its attendants represented the health systems in Massachusetts and Catalonia.
The article also mentions the measures Massachusetts is to implant in order to provide an almost universal health care coverage to its population. This will be possible in the near future only if there is a reduction of operational costs of up to 30 percent and they introduce innovations in services and the way they treat and care for their patients.
Roser Vicente points out that the Catalan system is also facing innovation as a way to guarantee its sustainability. As in the case of Massachusetts, Dr. Vicente remarks that telemedicine and information systems are key elements of the process.
